Democrats and Republicans in the United States are already at odds over a timetable to leave Iraq, despite last week’s proclamations they would work together.

The Democrat Senator who is expected to take over the United States’ powerful Senate Armed Services Committee says he hopes the US will begin pulling troops out of Iraq in four to six months.

Speaking on the American ABC network, Senator Carl Levin said the US should pressure the Iraqi Government for a political solution to the turmoil there.

He said the US military commitment in Iraq is not open-ended and Americans had voted dramatically, overwhelmingly and resoundingly for a change of course in Iraq.

The prominent Republican Senator John McCain is advocating the opposite strategy.

“I believe that a withdrawal, or a date for withdrawal, will lead to chaos in the region,” he said.

“And most military experts think the same thing.

“I believe that there are a lot of things we can do to salvage this, but they all require the presence of additional troops.”

So, the battle lines are being drawn and the pieces being set. I think the key question will be how many generals and other senior army personals will start voicing their concern either way. They are probably going to determine the future of US in Iraq. My money is on democrats. And I am sure many conservatives also say the same thing so that 5 years from now they can go on about how democrats “lost the war” just like in Vietnam.

The U.S. Election

So. The democrats are back in power. Now we can expect major changes, major announcements, better management of social services, better management of the Iraq war, better……oh please. Give me a break.

A set of corrupt politicians have been replaced by politicians who have not raised their pinky finger in protest against the current administration. There are a few progressive democrats that have been chosen but I wonder how long would it take for them to conform to the system? “All The King’s Men” anyone?

I think the first 100 days in which the democrats have promised to raise the minimum wage rates, look at the whole immigration issue, implement a 9/11 commission’s recommendations and end subsidies for big oil, will show how much of a back bone do the democrats have. If they role over on any one of these issues, we will know the truth. In the meantime, nothing’s changed.

Ups And Downs

Just when I thought that the Harper government is become a little responsible (canceling the Income Trusts in Canada was an excellent idea), he goes and shows why he will probably be considered Bush’s stooge.

Today Harper canceled a key meeting with EU leaders over Kyoto agreements. The meeting had “admonish Canada” written all over it especially after the recent months have seen heightened awareness of the global warming problem, numerous reports/studies saying basically we are in deep, deep sh*t. After all these reports and PR campaigns what does the Harper government do? They introduce the Clean Air Act. A joke so horrendous that no one finds it funny. There are no caps in the act, no plan on how to help reduce the industrial waste, no plans for alternative energy sources, no R & D into better machineries. Nothing. Just an empty line saying that the greenhouse gases will be reduced by 50% in the year…..2050!!! 44 years from now!!! Is that’s how you give industry time to “adjust” to your plan? Absolute crap of
a plan and on top of that the government says that since we are doing such a bang up job in the environment circles, we don’t need Kyoto plan!! Ooooh boy. By now I know that this government needs to go out power now else we are finished. The problem is that the replacement party is no better.

So, all in all, we Canadians are in deep trouble unless we vote Green.

BTW, to all those who say that Kyoto is a dead treaty and Harper is doing the right thing by not pursuing it. Fine!!! Go to the meeting and explain why you think it is dead and try and convince others. But not attending the meeting by giving a flimsy excuse “I need to be in Canada because the house is in session and we are a minority government” is “diplomese” for I don’t know why I don’t like the treaty and I don’t have to explain it to you why I don’t.
