Matrix?

Filed under: Science, Social Studies — agsharma @ 9:25 pm

Ok, how is this different from the premise in the movie Matrix where the human body is basically a battery?

Scientists are working on a new type of nanogenerator that could draw the necessary energy from flowing blood in the human body, by using the beating heart and pulsating blood vessels.

Zhong Lin Wang and colleagues at the Georgia Institute of technology hope to be able to incorporate the new nanogenerator into biosensors, environmental monitoring devices and even personal electronics that will require no fuel source, internal or external.

It will produce its own electricity while immersed in biological fluids or other liquids, using ultrasonic waves as the energy source. So far, they achieved the nanogenerator effect in an array of nanowires that could produce as much as 4 watts/cubic centimeter.

Boy, can`t wait for the religious nuts to cry FOUL.

I have no idea why Hollywood and popular culture continues to harbour suspicion of humans trying to better our bodies with new technologies. There will come a time when a person’s damaged brain will be supplemented by an artificial brain. Will that person be considered less than any other human being? So why are we always afraid of exploring the realms of science (E.g. Stem Cell Research) when the benefits to human society are huge.

Pass The Buck On Your Fat Ass

Filed under: Society — agsharma @ 9:14 pm

I love it when modern society passes our problems to someone else. Here is another excuse for us not losing our weight…..

Obesity can spread from person to person, much like a virus, researchers are reporting today. When a person gains weight, close friends tend to gain weight, too.

That’s great!!! My paunch is really not my problem….but wait…none of my friends are really fat, that means, oh no…..I am the source of fat among my friends!!! Will they stop hanging out with me? Will the ostracize me because I may pass them the virus? Damn, this modern society.

What’s There To Like About The Arctic Monkeys

Filed under: Music — agsharma @ 12:54 pm

So there is this band from Sheffield that has a ridiculous name - The Arctic Monkeys;

The band is only a few years old and they are already have been put on a pedestal by the British music press as the best of the best;

The band has been named the best even though they have only released 2 albums and 1 EP;

The band members’ age ranges from 20 to 21. What could they possibly know about life?

However, when I first listened to the song “I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor”, the song just blew me away. The song is a “good ole” rock and roll song but within it was the interplay of the lyrics, the melody and the thrashing guitars which came out of nowhere in the chorus. And it didn’t end there. The rest of their songs on “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I Am Not” are mind blowing to say the least. It’s no wonder that the British press loves this album. The songs are full of fun and infectious melodies and loud guitars.

But another reason to really like the band is their seemingly complete disregard for the rule book of the music industry. They simply don’t care about the music executives (although I am not sure what they are going to do now, since they are a huge commodity). They built their base from the ground up. I read somewhere that the pattern they followed (totally unintentional, I am sure) is probably the new way of marketing a band. They allowed fans to swap their music, they never invited any music big wigs to their promotional gigs only fans were invited, they did not sign to any label (Indie or mainstream) although they finally signed to a label which is run from an apartment! and they do not like music critics at all. I mean which band do you know out there that comes out with a sophomoric effort (an EP) titled “Who The F*uck Are The Arctic Monkeys”. That’s just a finger to the music industry. And you have to love the band for just that point.

So, they just got lucky with their first album. It was a big hit in England and Australia to the point where they set the record for the fastest selling album in history of music in England. Their singles have constantly been at the top 5 across the world (except US). So they will probably fail like The Strokes and The Libertines with their second album. Well, not true. Their
second album “Favourite Worst Nightmare” is even better!! The first song Brainstorm starts with a bang and never lets up. The drumming, the guitar and the bass just pound and pound to an almost distorted sound (although they never distort their music) and then come the melodies. Their music is just an mix of different styles and that’s one of the things I really like about The Monkeys. It’s like they have taken a part Sex Pistols, a part of The Clash, a part of Ramones and a part of Oasis and churned it all together to create this music. My favourite song from this album is “Fluorescent Adolescent” a song about musing of an older woman, over extravagance youth and the lyrics are, surprisingly for 20 year olds, really intelligent.

Their on stage performances have come under fire, though. This is because they just stand or, at the most swing, in one position and belt out their numbers. I was mildly surprised by this as their songs seemed like the band would be really swinging it on stage. So I went over to YouTube to have a look at them myself. And…..it’s true. They just stand and sing. However, the difference is that the way they sing is really infectious. If I could be so taken by a recorded performance, imagine how the audience at the show would feel. I saw in one of their performances where the audience is literally walking around the stage and dancing with the boys just singing like it’s all a part of the show!! I think that maybe one of their charms. A band that has a lot of interaction with the audience is always appreciated.

Anyway, I will be keeping an eye on this band. I just hope they have a bright future ahead of them. You never know, they may be the next White Stripes.

Oh Man!!

Filed under: Society — agsharma @ 9:33 pm

Now why doesn’t this ever happen at my hometown?

A mysterious blonde paid a visit to a petrol station shop in the small eastern German town of Doemitz on Sunday — wearing nothing but a pair of golden stilettos and a thin gold bracelet.

The tall, slender woman strolled into the shop in the town of Doemitz on the warm afternoon and bought cigarettes, petrol station employee Ines Swoboda told Reuters on Monday.

“I wasn’t surprised because she’s come in naked before — she’s a very nice woman,” Swoboda said, adding none of the other customers was bothered. The woman could have faced charges of creating a public disturbance if anyone had complained.

A quick-witted customer did, however, snap pictures of the woman believed to be about 30 years old as she walked back to a waiting Ferrari and climbed into the passenger seat. Several of those photos appeared in the German media on Monday.

The Pharmaceutical Juggernaut

A grave injustice of today’s world is that lifesaving drugs are widely available, but priced out of reach of so many of the people who need them the most. In the late 1990s, we were confronted with a stark representation of that reality: Most people infected with HIV in wealthy countries were leading healthy and productive lives, thanks to antiretroviral drugs, or ARVs; but in poor countries, HIV meant a rapid decline and certain death.

In 2001, the Doha Declaration on the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement and Public Health established that intellectual property rights should not prevent countries from taking measures to protect public health. Indian generic drugs producers marketed ARVs at a fraction of earlier prices. Some pharmaceutical companies lowered their prices significantly in low- and middle-income countries. As a result, the number of people on ARVs soared: 10 times more people in developing countries were on ARVs in 2006 than in 2001. This has kept parents with children longer, helped societies stay productive and improved the overall quality of life for millions.

A lawsuit now underway in India could reverse this progress.

…….the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis filed two lawsuits against the government of India.

The quality and affordability of its generic drugs have made India a virtual “pharmacy to the world.” Nearly 70 percent of generic drugs manufactured in India are exported to other developing countries. The expansion of AIDS treatment over the past few years has been driven by the accessibility and affordability of generic ARVs from India. For example, Lesotho buys nearly 95 percent of all its ARVs from India; 90 percent of the ARVs used in Zimbabwe’s AIDS treatment program come from India.

If Novartis wins its Section 3(d) case, and other pharmaceutical companies follow in Novartis’ footsteps, minor modifications of existing drugs would be eligible for patents in India. That would prevent generic competition. If fewer generic drugs could be produced in India, fewer poor people around the world would have access to essential drugs for a range of illnesses. In particular, AIDS and TB treatment programs all over the world are likely to suffer.

Yes you have spent millions doing R & D. But is it also not true that you have made a successful ROI (Return On Investment)? Why do you want to see thousands upon thousands of people suffer? Let the generic manufaturing continue.

The True Art Of Surfing

Filed under: Uncategorized — agsharma @ 10:14 pm

Now this is what I call educated pupils…..

Nigerian schoolchildren who received laptops from a U.S. aid organisation have used them to explore pornographic sites on the Internet, the official News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported on Thursday.

NAN said its reporter had seen pornographic images stored on several of the children’s laptops.

“Efforts to promote learning with laptops in a primary school in Abuja have gone awry as the pupils freely browse adult sites with explicit sexual materials,” NAN said.

Men….we are born with this innate ability to sniff out porn from all corners of the world….even the digital world.

The National Post (A Rant)

Filed under: Uncategorized — agsharma @ 8:22 am

Reading The National Post can give any right thinking human being a heartburn.

The National Post’s best use is a replacement for toilet paper.

The National Post’s editors sole qualification seems to be “must hate liberals and progressive at all cost”.

The National Post’s readers do not need to have an IQ more than 50.

For those who did not get the gist, I HATE The National Post. Whenever I have been brain dead (hangovers, sleepless nights etc.) I always read The National Post. Reading the editorials and the letters to the editors always wakes me from my stupor. I mean any newspaper giving Ann Coulter (United States’ hate machine) column space on their pages is in my books the most
pathetic excuse for a newspaper. This paper is exclusive for the low brow and Nationalist Canadians (and there are quite a few).

This paper was started by the (in-)famous Conard Black and right from the word go, the editorial and letters section of the paper were notoriously anti-French, anti-Immigrant, anti-Non-White and violently Homophobe. The paper espouses all the anti Canadian values that we all so cherish and take for granted which begs the question why does it sell at all at a national
level? I will not go into that in this post as I want to discuss an article I saw in today’s newspaper and demonstrate to you why I think this paper is trash.

“Foreign Aid Swipe At US Belies reality” by Steven Edwards.

I have never read any article by Edwards before but after going through it (the article) I realise that I have not really missed much. The tripe that he calls “analysis” was enough to make me tear of the section and polish my shoes with it (so there is some use for the paper after all!!)

In a nutshell Edwards says that the UN’s complaint that US and other rich countries are defaulting on their promise to spend 0.7% of their Gross National Income (GNI) on foreign aid is foolish as to the 0.22% of GNI that US government gives to the US, private contributions from the US is around 0.76% of GNI. Hence, the combined 0.98% is more than the stated target.
Similarly in Canada, 0.34% is the government contribution and 0.66% is the private contribution, hitting 1% well above the target.

Now, the moment I read the article I immediately saw the flaw in his argument. If a doofus like me can see it, I hope every thinking person out there saw it too.

Mr. Edwards, did you read your own article carefully or do you spit out garbage and collect the cheque and run?

He starts off by describing the situation where the governments of the rich countries pledged 0.7% of their GNI as foreign aid at a UN forum. The key words here are PLEDGED BY THE GOVERNMENTS. By the elected officials who have gone on to make promises on a world forum. They promised to put in 0.7% which comes from the taxes that the government collects from the denizens of the state. So if 0.7% was pledged, why the hell isn’t it allocated? DO NOT LOOK AT THE CITIZENS MAKING PRIVATE CONTRIBUTIONS. If the individual thinks that she wants to contribute more than what was already deducted from her taxes, it is her right to do so. The government or any other body (he sites the Hudson Institute of Washington as the source of this argument which is a hard core Right Wing body that has a nuclear scientist (who wrote papers on “how to win nuclear wars”) for a head) has no right to pad their figures
with a private contribution made between the individual and her choice of charity/family in another country or whatever way or method by which she chooses to disperse her wealth. This is like saying that the private contribution made by a citizen to The Sick Kids’ Hospital at Toronto is half of what the government funds, hence The Sick Kids’ Hospital is fully funded
by the government.

Why in the world would someone make such an atrociously stupid argument and still be allowed to command 1/3rd of the page on a national newspaper is beyond me. This clearly shows Edwards is a lackey of the right wing machine; He’s another wingnut who wants to seem to be “important” while he is putting in his article and saying not too subtly that UN is just a whiny world forum and has no clout. Of course, this is also the view of Hudson Institute which was a major backer of John Bolton, the Bush lackey who had to resign from his post as the UN ambassador from the US when the democrats refused to reconfirm his position. I think Edwards was, basically, called and told what to say and he did.

And that’s kind of journalism/opinion that really irks me. A “mighty” think tank body tells the journalist to write some crap on a national paper, and the journalist bends over backwards to do it. This is not journalism but diction at it’s best.

I once made the mistake of subscribing to The National Post (when I had just arrived in the country) thinking that the deal I was given was quite good from a national newspaper. In a week I found out why. Who in their right mind would read day after day the editorial and letters section that was racist and close minded. I cancelled it. I remember calling to cancel and
was asked by the person why I was cancelling. I said that the paper was absolutely crap and I disagreed with everything that the editors wrote. And the person said “I know what you mean”. When your employees think you are crap, then trust me, you are crap.

Michael Moore Stumped

Filed under: Uncategorized — agsharma @ 2:40 pm

Yes. It is possible.

The loud mouth guy was totally stumped on The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer (actually by another guest on the show by the name of Dr. Sanjay Gupta). Ok, it was only at one point but it shows this guy can be made to shut up.

The thing is that I love Moore’s work. I have seen all his documentaries and the sole movie he has made (Canadian Bacon, highly recommended, BTW) and the thing about him is that the passion with which he speaks about a topic and presents the whole package, it’s nearly impossible not to agree with him even though you see the holes in his arguments later on. At least he is willing to put himself in front and center to get the debate going.

So, when Dr. Sanjay Gupta (a CNN hack who provided a live coverage of the first operation from Iraq…..oooooh!) said something to the effect that the countries that Moore portrayed as having a better health care system than US aren’t exactly free (Moore kept making the claim that they were free). Gupta pointed out, rightly, that the taxes on the countries are higher than they
are in the US so the Health care is not exactly free because the money from the taxes are what fund the health care systems. And Moore had no reply to it except “Hoo Boy”.

So I have come to the rescue of Moore here. Dr. Gupta let’s do a little logic thinking here, shall we?

Every individual in Canada is taxed and a part of the tax goes to fund the Health care system. That we both agree with. However, when I break a leg or get sick or get a fever, I go to the hospital and am checked and treated and put back in the car after the treatment, I PAY NO MONEY. No matter what I have been afflicted with, I do not have to pay because I have ALREADY BEEN TAXED. This is something that blowhards like you fail to understand about
Universal Health Care. Under a universal health care, since the costs are distributed among the entire population, the actual cost of a treatment of an individual can be absorbed easily. This is the basic tenet of the insurance industry. Spread the costs to keep the actual payment low. Yes
there are serious flaws with the Canadian system. Wait times are notoriously long. Special treatment takes a long time to come. But NO ONE IS REFUSED immediate health care. No one is told that you cannot pay so get out even if it means you will die. Apparently, Dr. Gupta, that seems to be A-OK in your books.

You’re welcome Michael.

The Right Way To Think

Filed under: Uncategorized — agsharma @ 7:46 pm

So the next time you see me yawn…..I am putting my analytical mind at ease……

Over the years, there have been many theories for why people yawn. It has been associated with sleepiness and boredom, and, incorrectly, with low oxygen levels in the blood.

“No one knows why we yawn,” says Andrew C. Gallup, a psychology professor at the State University of New York at Albany.

Now Dr. Gallup and fellow researchers have a new explanation: yawning, they said, is a way for the body to cool the brain.

Anthony Westell

Filed under: Moronic Mainstream — agsharma @ 10:08 am

God, if such an entity exists, really must have a lousy sense of humour. Why else would he create a human being like Anthony Westell who “…..served without distinction in the second world war” but still had the temerity to ask “…..aren’t the news media, including this one (Globe & Mail), making far too much of a few deaths in Afghanistan?”

The local village idiot I am talking of has an article on www.globeandmail.com (ed: will provide the actual link later <Link>) where he asks the above eternally stupid question.

To even begin to answer this question is to slap the face of each young soldier who died in Afghanistan. But idiots like Anthony Westell and Coyne and the entire editorial team of The National Post keep tooting their trumpets like little kids in the playground hoping to catch attention. Invariably, one of them is too loud and needs to be told to keep it down.

The biggest beef I have with the pro-war cheering squad is how they compare this war with the world wars I & II. That comparison is wrong on so many levels that the integrity of the pro-war cheering squad breaks down right from the word go. And that’s exactly what the new buffoon on the block has done. Here’s what Westell had to say in

“……..Three months ago, we celebrated the victory at Vimy Ridge. About 3,500 Canadians died there in the span of a few days, among 60,000 who perished during the First World War. Another 42,000 died in the Second World War - and several hundred in the Korean War.”

In 2001, I created a drinking game. Each time an Armchair Warrior compares WOT (War On Terror) with the other wars, have a drink. Unfortunately, that comparison has been made so many times that I have had to join AA.

Armchair Warriors, can we sit down and please try and understand that the WOT is NOT like the wars against Germany, Korea or Japan. Those countries were the Aggressors. They wanted to gain land and resources from the opposite side and used whatever resources they had to try and achieve their goals. These goals are commonly known as Imperialist goals something the Romans did, the Tsars did, the Persians did, the Greeks did, the British did, the French did and yes what the Americans are doing right now. On each occasion the world stood up to these aggressors and were victorious. Go back to re-read history if you don’t believe it. In some cases the aggressors were beaten in a battle and in others, the aggressors lost to a culture. No matter how and when, the aggressors ALWAYS lost.

The terrorists (it’s such a loose term and I use it only in reference to the suicide bombers and religious dolts) do not have any Imperialistic goals. The terrorists have a Cause. Their cause is overtly religious and the belief that They Are Right. They cannot be aggressors in the conventional sense. They do not have armies, planes, tanks, infantry etc. to fight the western society. So they use the next best weapon. Fear. Fear is such a potent weapon. Put the fear of loss of life into a person, and that person is liable to do anything to prevent it.

They do not want to rule western society, they do not want to come and live on the Harbourfront. They do not want to ride the TTC. They do not want to study in our universities. They want to DESTROY the western civilization and turn it into their own image.

Only the dumbest of the dumbest of the dumb would actually believe what the terrorists are saying. No matter how hard they try, the CANNOT destroy western civilization. No one can. USSR tried and failed miserably so go ask them if you want to continue that discussion.

The only people who can destroy the western civilization are people LIVING in western civilization.

Why is the western society so much envied? Because of the rich mix of individual rights, freedom of expression and the clear separation of religion and government. There is accountability and transparency from the government. Which is not to say that the people running the country are not corrupt. This means that if they are caught in the act, they face the full might of the judicial system (inspire of President’s power to pardon criminals). The judicial system is the best in the world. The news media is the best in the world.

Therefore, when a news media stops repeating the government line and asks “what exactly are our young men and women dying in Afghanistan for?” the government has a responsibility in replying honestly. Instead what we get are inane lines like “….fighting for our freedoms….” or “….if we don’t fight them there then we have to fight them here….” or “…..soldiers choose to fight…..”.

Can someone from the government please explain to us why are we in Afghanistan so that our brave soldiers can feel their “sacrifices” are justified? Anyone? Hello?

I’d like to think that soldiers are not mindless robots. Yes, they do exactly what they are told but in their military minds there must be some independent thought that told then that what Hitler did was wrong hence the sacrifices at Normandy, Vimy etc. are justified. Similarly today’s soldier in Afghanistan must be wondering why exactly are we in Afghanistan? Is there some military purpose for their presence? Soldiers rarely will ask such a question aloud so it’s left up to the news media and the internet to ask these questions. And that’s exactly what a prick like Anthony Westell cannot comprehend.

Mr. Anthony Westell this is a democracy. You can ask your stupid questions all you want but be ready for honest replies which might make your simple brain explode.

So, to answer your question Mr. Anthony Weasel……each dead soldier represents the complete failure of the previous and current government’s policy of keeping our soldiers in a mission which has no clear definition and no clear end. And no, pulling out at a specified date is not “the end” as the soldiers are going to continue to die until the pullout. Without holding the government to accountability how exactly are we different from the more repressive regimes of the world. The job of us “anti-war lefties” is to demand a clear and unambiguous answer from the government and apparently your job is to toe the government line. Best of luck with it.

By the way, your bio at the end says “….served without distinction at the second world war”. Maybe we should hand you a rifle and ship you to Afghanistan to earn that distinction…..
